With a fresh new year now upon us, we’re definitely ready to start looking forward to some new trends in costume jewellery – and it looks like coins and discs will be the first big thing for 2021.
Fashion bible Harper’s Bazaar said it is already seeing a host of this kind of jewellery popping up in designer collections as part of a wider desire to convey good fortune and positive vibes, as well as to accessorise in something ornate after months in loungewear.
Of course, coin-style jewellery is nothing new, having been used throughout history to bring good fortune for the wearer. New York’s MET Museum has examples from the Ancient Egyptians, while people in the 1600s would gift ‘love tokens’ in the form of coins that could be engraved with sentimental messages and worn as pendants.
Coins had another resurgence during the Second World War, when soldiers fighting far from home would send ‘sweetheart jewellery’ back to their loved ones – and they came back with a vengeance in the 1970s after Farrah Fawcett appeared on the cover of US Vogue sporting a layered gypsy-style coin necklace to great effect.
Now, big jewellery brands are showcasing an exciting array of bullion once more, with Versace and Bulgari among the names creating this type of accessory for their runways in both gold and silver, and this trickling down to our favourite Insta style icons.
This is one trend we’re very pleased to see, as coin jewellery is really easy to wear yet makes a big style statement at the same time.
A disc-adorned necklace will also be ideal to stand out over the chunky knitwear we’re wearing while the weather is still bitterly cold, but fit in perfectly with more bohemian tops as the warmer months approach too.
What’s more, you can layer coin necklaces up, which would look fabulous against beach cover-ups should we be able to go on foreign holidays again soon.
As ever, we’re right on-trend here at Majique, with some great coin necklaces and bracelets already in stock. We love this style with its multitude of gold-toned discs, while this one is more delicate for higher up on the neckline.
This bracelet would make the perfect complementary piece too, thanks to its splash of colour alongside the metal coin.
It’s just a taste of what we have on our wonderful website, so why not cheer yourself up with a browse and a treat this chilly January?
