Layering necklaces: How #neckmess became de rigeur

As jewellery enthusiasts, we’ve never really held much faith in the old adage that ‘less is more’. For several years now, we’ve been happily stacking our rings and bracelets in order to create movement and show off more personality in our accessories.

That’s why we’re thrilled to see there’s a new trend in the world of necklaces – and it involves wearing as many of them as your heart desires.

Everyone is suddenly starting to appreciate the eclectic look that layering up chains and pendants can provide, so much so that the hashtag #neckmess is trending on Instagram – and we’re seeing it everywhere we look.

It has even made the style pages of some of the biggest news providers, with both The Times in Britain and US publication the New York Times recently highlighting the trend.

As Jessica Diamond from the former points out, #neckmess is exciting because it wasn’t driven by a particular brand suddenly deciding this is what we all should be wearing, but rather rose organically from jewellery-loving consumers like you.

We love #neckmess here at Majique, partly because it’s a great opportunity to wear more than one of your favourite pieces of costume jewellery at once, but also because it’s a highly personal and expressive trend.

Just like with charms on a charm bracelet, you can collect memories within your necklaces and enjoy them whenever you happen to glance in the mirror. What’s more, mixing the pieces up will create a different look and feel each time, so there’s no limit to your creativity and the eventual outcome.

Check out our blog next week, when we’ll be posting a how-to on #neckmess in order to show you how best to wear layered necklaces, as well as our top tips on getting the look.

In the meantime, you can check out our website for some fab already-layered looks that will help you take out the guesswork.

This one has two layers to ease you in to the trend gradually, as does this style in pretty turquoise and silver tones.

On the other hand, if you want to go all out, we love this one with mixed metals, dangly charms and tactile coins.

Just remember that more is more for #neckmess, and we’ll see you next week!
