One thing we always look forward to is Pantone’s announcement of its ‘Colour of the Year’. It always has a big effect on the world of fashion, interiors and jewellery, and it’s fun to see how designers interpret it in different ways.
For 2021, we had a special treat, because the design house has revealed we’re getting two for the price of one. This year, it’s all about Illuminating (a lemony yellow) and Ultimate Grey.
Pantone explained this will help to convey a message of both strength and hopefulness, which is certainly going to be essential as we weather what we pray is the last of this awful pandemic.
Ultimate Grey is highlighted as being dependable and wise, while Illuminating symbolises energy and awareness.
Laurie Pressman, Pantone Color Institute vice president, explained: We need to be uplifted, we need the optimism, we need that positivity. But [we] also need the strength and resilience in order to move through this time, and we will get there.”
It’s only the second time that Pantone has plumped for two colours, with the last time being in 2016 when it selected Rose Quartz and Serenity. Interestingly, 2020’s choice was Classic Blue – and we couldn’t have had a bluer year, frankly.
We’re really pleased to see grey and yellow take their turn in the spotlight, because we happen to think they’ve always been ideal together for early springtime.
What’s more, they also translate beautifully into costume jewellery. While richer yellows will pair well with gold-toned metal accents, more lemon-hued yellows (like Illuminating) are complemented perfectly with silver-toned metals like you’ll find in many of our pieces.
This type of accessory will look great as the sun starts to come out, but when we’re not quite ready for the boho styles that mean full summer.
To start you off, we’ve rounded up a couple of our items to wear as winter eventually evolves into spring. These earrings couldn’t be more Pantone-perfect and are super-stylish for daytime or evening, while this layered necklace would be equally at home over a polo neck or a long-sleeved T-shirt.
And if you just want Ultimate Grey while the weather’s chilly, check out costume jewellery in that shade here. Happy shopping – and don’t forget to share your Colour of the Year interpretations on our social media.
