Gold 'is Meghan's favourite' - the lowdown on our new princess's ring

After months of tedious Brexit news, there was finally something lively to talk about this week: Prince Harry got engaged to his sweetheart Meghan Markle - hooray!

Obviously, we were more excited about the ring than anything else and as a piece of royal jewellery, it didn't disappoint.

During a sit-down, in-depth interview with the BBC, Harry and Meghan showed off the Markle Sparkle, which the prince got down on one knee to offer her.

"It is obviously yellow gold because that's her favourite and the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana and the little diamonds either side are from my mother's jewellery collection," Harry said.

Movingly, the prince revealed he had the smaller stones (which are still pretty sizeable in anyone's book) incorporated to make him feel as though the late Diana, Princess of Wales was "with us on this crazy journey together".

"It's beautiful and he designed it, it's incredible," Meghan enthused. With his trademark jokey nature, her new fiance replied: "Yeah, make sure it stays on that finger."

We think it's interesting that Meghan has been revealed as a lover of yellow gold, as the metal has been enjoying something of a resurgence lately - and that's only likely to continue now. It's great for conveying a feeling of warmth and looking classy on anyone of any age.

It could be that the latest royal engagement ring also incorporates gold sourced from Wales, as this is a tradition going back to 1923 and the Queen Mother.

Sadly, we don't have anything in stock on the Majique website that's quite in the same league as the Markle Sparkle. However, if you do want to commemorate the special royal occasion, you could try this pretty gold-toned ring with a dainty diamante.

Harry and Meghan - who you might have seen on the US TV series Suits - have been dating since summer 2016 and the prince said he thought his late mother would approve of his bride.

"They'd be thick as thieves, without question, I think she would be over the moon, jumping up and down [and] excited for me. I'm sure she's with us, jumping up and down somewhere else," he added.

Very moving and a very good choice of jewellery too. We hope you'll join us here at Majique in wishing Prince Harry and Meghan Markle our warmest congratulations.
